Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Sean Upshaw is a Ph.D. student in Howard University’s Department of Communication, Culture, and Media Studies. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Memphis. His research interests are in communication and culture as related to health, prostate cancer and the patient-provider relationship. His academic enthusiasm for communication research is driven by a desire to explore and describe why and how communication processes shape an individual or population’s responses to health matters today. He joined the Howard Media Group because he recognizes that media messages targeting the underserved and underrepresented populations can sway their health decision-making experience.
